The derailment feature is tricked up in as much as when Derailments is turned on in the Options menu derailments are not turned on in the Sim until the speed limit is reached. If the speed limit is set high enough there will be no derailments. Why would they do such a thing?. The answer to that question is that with the default derailment force there are curves too tight, on ALL default routes, for the trains to be able to travel at the posted speed limits.
The most common derailment force used in the default rolling stock is about 0.25G (2.5KN per ton mass) this seems a low figure to me but I don't have any real world figures. To do any derailment force testing the route speed limit must be set to a low figure. I use 10 kph.” (James Hart)
