Russian freight trains

I hope that someone can give me an description what kind of freight trains there are in Russia. Maybe it's a bit easier if I compare with the kinds of freight trains here in the Netherlands, because that's easier for me and I hope also for you. You can see here:

-Coal and ore trains, these trains only consists of hoppers, mainly around 40 cars.
-Intermodal trains, these trains only consists of special flat cars for intermodal containers, around 30-40 cars.
-Mixed freight trains, freight trains with all kind of freightcars, around 30-40 cars.
-Lime trains, special hoppers, the trains are rarely longer than 20 cars
-Steel trains, special cars, around 20 cars.
-Chemical trains, only tank cars, 15-20 cars.
-Auto trains, bi-level autoracks, 20-40 cars.
-Grain trains, trains with special closed hoppers, 20-25 cars.

I also want to know which locomotives are used for freight trains.

All the types you spoke are used in Russia. But there are two main difrrerences:
1) Freight trains in Russia are often mixed with different kinds of traincars.
2) Our freight trains are significally longer and have much weight, consists varies from 40 to 100+ wagons and weight varies from 2000t to 6000t (or to 8000t in some regions). Also sometimes "doubled" trains are formed, which consists of two normal freight trains with their locos coupled together. They can reach 12000t weight.
I also want to know which locomotives are used for freight trains.
Main freight loco series are (from the first models from 1920s): Ss, VL19, VL22, VL8, VL23, VL10, VL11, OR(N60), VL60, VL80*, VL85, VL65, TE1, TE2, TE3, 2TE10*, 2TE116. The modern freight locos are: 2ES4K, 2(3)ES5K, ES6K, 2TE70, 2TE25K, GT1.

Railion 1600 03.07.2009 20:55

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. But are there also trains with only coal cars, intermodal cars, hoppers or autoracks, like here? The trains I spoke are the most common trains, if I say everything I have already seen, I guess the server is overloaded:rofl: And which locomotives of the kinds you said are in use at the moment?

Barmaley 03.07.2009 21:14

Freight locos in use current -
DC - VL10, VL11, 2ES4K, 2ES6
AC - VL80, VL85, 2ES5K, 3ES5K (for heavy profiles)
Diesel - 2TE10(V,M,U), 3TE10, 2TE116, 2TE70, 2TE25K

Raskolnikov 03.07.2009 22:41

Barmaley, you forgot about 2M62, 2M62U, 3M62U :)

Railion 1600 05.07.2009 22:08

Many thanks for your answers. Is there somewhere a 2ES4K, 2(3)ES5K, ES6K, 2TE70, 2TE25K or GT1 for download in MSTS? My bad Russian and because I don't know so many Russian MSTS sites makes it very hard to search them.

Railion 1600 17.07.2009 21:08

I've also searched at google, but I've nothing found:(

None of these locos available for downloading yet.

Barmaley 17.07.2009 22:08

They are coming soon :-)
They are coming soon :-)
At least some of them.

Railion 1600 17.07.2009 23:20

That would be very nice:D We can more different trains drive then:)

Are the single M62-units also in use now? Or are they only used for passenger trains or so?

Analytic 18.07.2009 06:49

I saw single M62 delivering small consists of coal hoppers from quarry or mine to station.
But as far as I know, they aren't used on mainline.

Russian freight trains

Hey, just joined the forums, and am happy to be here

Excuse me mister, but have you even realised what forum you registered in? Airsoft/Strikeball is not our speciality, unless it is used to deter hooligans from trains by the locomotive brigade. Or something. Check the forum's theme and try again please. :)

Something else about the freight trains, this time about the locomotives. Are Russian locomotives allowed in the Baltics, Belarus and Ukraine? And are locomotives from that countries allowed in Russia too, or is the security system different? For example, here in the Netherlands are only trains allowed that have the Dutch security system, the width and height aren't to high, the front have to be white or yellow that has to be at least 1 square meter (very stupid rule, I know so many trains here that don't have a white or yellow front) and for electric trains if they can run on 1500V DC.

Russian train services are done in "legs" So say Moscow-Border to Belarus is Russian train, then an Belorussin train, etc. I know of cases that USSR and Russia purchased US, and German locomotives to pick apart and study, but I do not know how they were transported.

On another note Siemens Velaro (basically your ICE 3 runs nicely on AC/DC combination all the way from St. Petersburg to Moscow, but it's new and not freight)

I hope that got something covered.

Railion 1600 03.10.2009 17:26

The ICE3 is an older model, and the Russian Velaro 'Sapsan' is an newer model, as far I know. There are 2 ICE3 versions, a `normal` ICE3 (this one can only run on 15 kV AC) and the ICE3M (this one can run on 15 kV AC, 25 kV AC, 3 kV DC and 1,5 kV DC). So the ICE3M is the version that runs here. At this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/40012911@N06/3875529738/ picture, taken by myself in Emmerich (Germany, just behind the border with the Netherlands) you can see that there isn't a pantograph in use now. Here changes the voltage between the German 15 kV AC and the Dutch 1,5 kV DC.
But if there aren't locomotive changes at borders, it was possible to drive with more different locomotives on Russian route's.

I see youære trying to sneak in some foreigners on our proud rails? Never! :P Just pulling your tail.

I would love to see foreign locomotives, but I'm afraid our "rembrigady" (The fixing crews) Would defecate bricks, Foreign locomotives are not used to our rails, or our rails to them, and noone can fix them.

I miss some Russian trains here! A few years ago were the Ludmilla's in use here, and I miss the cool desing and the great sounds of the Kolomna engines very much:( And this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/40012911@N06/3875538600/ silly locomotives have replaced the great Ludmilla's. I will never forget them.

It is heartwarming, that someone loves our old Ludmillas, thank you for careing, but as such, they are not "Russian" They are adapted for European width and condition I guess, but if you ever get nostalgic, come over and I'll show you dirty old Ludmilla's, rawr.

It isn't easy for me to come to Russia for a few trains, but I hope that I can see the Russian versions at least once in my life;)

You are missing out on all the goodies, like Te3, Er1 and such, hurry, before they got sawed up for scraps, and replaced with boring stupid Velaro's and CargoNet's

TRam_ 03.10.2009 18:48

The plants constucted ludmila's (the engines constructed at Kolomna, but final assembling was at Lugansk, Ukraine) continue their work, but, may it be, CargoNet are better for price/quality... sites are http://www.kolomnadiesel.com and http://www.luganskteplovoz.com
